Over the last few months I have become increasingly interested in 'singing for health.' For years there have been reports suggesting that singing is good for health and general wellbeing, and modern research is providing more and more evidence to support these findings, particularly in relation to a group or choir setting.
Not only is singing a great way to exercise your heart and lungs, it has also been shown to boost mental health, promote relaxation, improve breath control, as well as helping to lower stress and blood pressure. In addition to all of these benefits, singing has been shown to have specific benefits for people living with Dementia, Parkinson's disease, Chronic lung conditions and Cancer.
Being a fully qualified pharmacist as well as a vocal coach and singing teacher I find this area totally fascinating. As a result, I have undergone a variety of training courses to enable me to deliver singing groups tailored towards each of these conditions.
